About the Book

Her Part to Play Title: Her Part to Play
Author: Jenny Erlingsson
Publisher: Revell
Release Date: June 18, 2024
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Desperate for extra income after her mother's passing, Adanne accepts a last-minute job as a makeup artist for a movie filming in her small Alabama hometown. She's working to save her parents' legacy and help her brother, but the money hardly seems worth having to face the actor who got her fired from her last job in Hollywood.

John Pope has made his share of mistakes over the years. But after turning his life over to God and enduring a messy breakup, he's ready to start rebuilding his career. Imagine his surprise when the woman called in to cover for his usual makeup artist is a quiet but feisty newcomer on the set--and definitely not a fan.

Sparks of tension--and could that be attraction?--fly between them, but Adanne hates the spotlight, and John's scheming manager has bigger plans for him than to end up with the humble makeup girl from the small-town South. Can these star-crossed lovers find their way to happiness? Or will the bright lights of Hollywood blind their eyes to what's right in front of them?

Debut author Jenny Erlingsson's diverse cast comes alive with faith, romance, and a touch of humor to create a story worthy of the big screen.

My Thoughts

I'm so happy that I decided to give Christian fiction another try. The writing has evolved from rigid cardboard characters to relatable people with real lives and real faith.

Adanne and John are both dealing with the weight of their current circumstances, looking for hope in the face of hurt and loss.

John is new to faith, and Adanne has been a Christian much longer, however, she's suffering from a crisis of faith. It is not as terrible as the professor in God's Not Dead, but she fights the insidious doubts.

I loved the scene where she is visiting her nephew in the hospital. All she can do is sing a hymn where the lyrics express what she can't because she wants to believe but is doubtful after her prior experience.

I, too, have been to a point of crisis where my suffering was deep, and I was so angry that my body was present in church every week, but I tuned out the sermons.

Godly music restored me. It was like the scripture that says when we don't even know what to pray, the Holy Spirit does it for us with groanings too deep for words.

Jenny Erlingsson weaves a beautiful, realistic, faith-filled contemporary story of how God redeems us with His love. That very love makes it impossible to hold on to hurts and unforgiveness. The end result is two imperfect people looking to God for perfection.

Her Part to Play was a 5-star read. I was hooked by the cover and I was not disappointed. It had everything I love that makes a book an outstanding read: faith in action, real-life woes,  character transparency, character growth, and a touch of romance, clean, of course.

I received a complimentary copy and purchased the audio version. This review is written voluntarily.
